Charles Sumner
Sumner was an American politician and senator form Massachusetts, leader of antislavery groups of Massachusetts and also a leader of the Radical Republicans during the American Civil War. He gave a passionate speech speaking out against slavery to the senate, it was called "The Crime Against Kansas" and it lasted 2 days. In the speech he verbally attacked and singled out Andrew P. Butler for his proslavery beliefs. Sumner was later attacked for his speech by Butlers nephew, Congressman Preston S. Butler, with a cane. Sumner suffered brain damage from the attack, and couldn't return to the senate for more than three years.
